We have all experienced the suddenness of a power failure on a stormy night. One moment, the room is filled with light; the next, we are plunged into darkness, fumbling to find our way. That ordinary darkness helps us imagine the deeper gloom of human history—times of oppression and unspeakable suffering that remind us how deep darkness can be. Into that darkness God spoke hope. Isaiah declares, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light” (Isa. 9:2). He points forward to Immanuel—God with us—who would bring justice, peace, and life (Isa. 7:14; 9:6–7). Christmas begins here: not with tinsel or tradition, but with the promise that the Light has come in a Person.
